Sometimes It Is Ok and Sometimes It Is Not Ok

October 2, 2016

There are many instances in the Bible where sometimes something is a sin and in other circumstances it's Ok. Let’s look at a few of these situations and think about how they apply to each of us. There are more then what I will cover but you will get the idea.

Drugs:

Too Much:

Romans 13   (NIV)      (laws of the land concerning illegal drug use)
13 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

Just Right:

Matthew 9      (legal drugs are mostly safe)
12 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.

Work:

Too Much:

Matthew 6
24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

Just Right:

Colossians 3
23 whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.

Self:

Too Much:

Philippians 2:4   (ESV)
4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Just Right:

Ephesians 2
10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Sex:

Too Much:

1 Corinthians 7  (NIV)
7 Now for the matters you wrote about: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” 2 But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband.

Just Right:

1 Corinthians 7
3 The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband.

Food:

Too Much:

Philippians 3  (NIV)

19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things.

Just Right:

1 Corinthians 10
31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

Others:

Too Much:

Romans 12:17
Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

Just Right:

Galatians 6:10
So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith.

Alcohol:

Too Much:

Proverbs 20  (NIV)
1 Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler;
whoever is led astray by them is not wise.

Just Right:

1 Timothy 5
23 Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.

Most of these have a soft line as to right and wrong but the exception is Sex….. It's ether OK or it's NOT.
