Behold I make all things new
18 “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.
19 See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.
When a couple gets married their goal is to blend together to form a team that will improve both of their lives and set the stage for a better outcome. Now in order to do this both need to agree to let go of the old ways to make room for the new. This can be a great challenge because few people understand what exactly the marriage covenant is about.
Most people go into marriage thinking that their new spouse will add to what they already are, when in fact this doesn’t work unless one party agrees to be a slave instead of a partner. If a marring couple is going to make a successful couple than both will need to let go of the past to make room for the new. They are becoming a new creation in and thru each other.
Walking with God is exactly like this, and it is an amazing coincidence God made marriage like it is. Marriage trains us for our walk and position with God. Not all people come thru this door but for our comparison today we will use this relationship.
Instructions for Christian Living
17 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.
18 They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.
19 Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.
So here God insists that we let go of the old ways of the world and the futility of worldly wisdom and how the world thinks. Note here to self “don’t forget that the world has trained me how to think so I must be suspicious of my thoughts in relationship to how my new life expands”. The world’s leaders think they know what to do and God calls them ignorant because of their hard hearts. We also know the only cure for a hard heart is thru Jesus our Lord, there are no shortcuts. They are also impure and full of greed, not just greedy but full of greed.
20 That, however, is not the way of life you learned
21 when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;
23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds;
24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
When we get saved we are expected to begin to let go of the past so we can begin our new lives with Jesus. You can begin a new job if you are already working a job. NO you must first let go of old job so you can move on to the new one. So in our lives the revelation of Jesus is to put an end to our old world ways that lead to death, and take up the new life in Jesus that leads to a new life. Sometimes the old way are kinda clingy and it may take a little time to shake it off, but the Holy Spirit will bring you through if you ask.
25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.
26 “In your anger do not sin”[d]: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,
27 and do not give the devil a foothold.
28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.
29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
You can’t have two futures we can ether walk in our old ways or we can let go and move on to the new. Relationships, work, school and growth it applies to everything. You can’t have 2 boyfriends or 2 girlfriends no you must let go of one to move on to the other, at least if you want to keep living you won’t.
This scripture is not a suggestion but a key…your key….to your new creation “In .Christ”
Lord Jesus thank you for saving us and empowering us to walk into the new creations we are becoming. We let go of the old and choose to follow you and thanks for the new heart. Amen
