Everyone knows what sin is and that is I did something I shouldn’t have. Even people that are unsaved are aware of sin at least most of them. And for all of my life that was enough of a definition, because we don’t really want to talk about it that much anyway. We just know when we are involved in it; there will be trouble and God can you get me out of this one, please.
He that covers his sins shall not prosper: but whoever confesses and forsakes them shall have mercy.
11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. 14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.
I tell you, No: but, except you repent, you shall all likewise perish.
The issue here for me at least is the word sin, it really doesn’t mean anything; it feels like a made up word. We just plug it in whenever we do something in the wrong category. Well there is that sin thing again better say you’re sorry. I realized that the word sin didn’t carry much influence over me even though I know I need to stay away from doing it.
Last year I passed a kidney stone and it was eventful and I never want to do that again. So recently I had some of the very symptoms I had the first time I passed that stone, so wanting to avoid that experience again I went through heart to make sure I was clean so could beg God to spare me that experience again.
I was out and about and heard an old song I knew. The mantra of that song it “R.E.S.P.E.C.T.” and the line following says “all I am asking for is a little respect” WOW it hit me like a baseball bat, God wants us to respect Him. God is almighty and His authority is the only authority in existence, everyone works off God’s authority. When we sin we are disrespecting God and God’s authority. We were bought for a price by God (1cor 7:23) and He has expectations of us. Purchased from the flames and torment of Hell, and we got an awesome deal.
Now God set down some expectations of His kids on how they are to behave, He also gave the Holy Spirit top make it possible to achieve this victory.
1 Corinthians 6
15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.” 17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.
Paul here explains that he will not unite Christ in him to a prostitute and that is out of RESPECT for who Christ is.
As I thought about this I decided that I could actually repent better with this knowledge.
Father forgive all of our sins and forgive us for disrespecting you and your authority. Thank you for taking us in and giving us a place in your family and home. Father teach us how to behave and how to respect you and honor you with our lives. In Jesus' Name, Amen!
