The Beginning of Sin and Death

March 5, 2017

The Beginning of Sin and Death

Gen 2:16-17
"And the LORD God commanded the man, 'You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”

Here is the first indication of sickness and death: disobedience: "you will surely die." Disobedience removed man from God’s protection.

From this statement we can deduce, that the knowledge of evil leads to sickness and death. The word die being death from something?

When Adam and Eve sinned, they didn't die! No, they didn't die, not immediately. They lived for hundreds of years after the incident, but they eventually did die. Why did it take them so long to die? Well there weren’t many laws because there weren’t many people. So there wasn’t much sin in the world ether everyone was busy staying alive. So sin didn’t play a big part in people’s death, but also the consequences of that first sin were a complete separation from the tree of life. SO even though they sinned very little, without the recharging of the tree of life their bodies actually started to deteriorate.

Gen 3:22-24
22 And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” 23 So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

Spiritual death came first, as man now was ashamed to meet God in person. Adam's first response to God's voice after he sinned was: Gen 3:10 "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid."

Physical death came next, and this was made clear by God Himself: Gen 3:19 "Until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return."

Romans 5:12-14
12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned 13 To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law. 14 Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come.

Humankind was now subject to diseases, sickness, illnesses and deterioration. Sin which is separation from God was the source of these nasty diseases.

In Romans 5:12-14 there is an explanation of sin and death and how it played out without any law in effect. Since at this time there were no laws, but there was still sin and death.

Now grace has done for us what is in effect the same thing, that is lifted us up above sin. By Jesus death and our receiving of forgiveness of sins we are now covered by grace and we live “IN Christ Jesus”.

So here is Paul’s explanation of sin thru grace.

Romans 6:15-23
15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means! 16 Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. 18 You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.
19 I am using an example from everyday life because of our human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness. 20 When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. 21 What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. 23
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
