Understanding How to Receive a Prophetic Word

April 30, 2017

If you are called as a prophet, it is an occupation. You cannot turn off the instinct to stand in the office of the prophet any more than a physician can turn off the instinct to help people heal. If you are called to prophetic ministry, you will walk in the revelatory gifts as a way of life, not just occasionally. You will feel the unction to walk in prophetic gifts consistently.

The modern prophetic ministry is more than the usual public perception. It is more than prophesying over people in prayer lines. It is more than having dreams, visions and angelic visitations. It is much more; Modern-day prophets are reformers, like John the Baptist.

Prophetic ministry should bring positive change and hope. A reformation mindset is part of what it means to be prophetic. Prophets have reformation in their DNA.

Reformer: Someone who makes changes in order to improve it.

Modern-day prophets are called to prepare a people for the Lord by pointing them to an intimate relationship with Jesus, equipping them to discern His voice, speaking words of warning or correction that God gives them and standing in the gap between man and God. Usually this latter function takes place through intercession. Not all intercessors are prophets, but all prophets are intercessors. It is part of the prophetic priestly duty to make intercession. The first time you see the word prophet in the Bible (Genesis), it is in connection with intercession. You cannot separate the prophet from prayer because prayer is the prophet's connection with God and His will.

What a Prophet is?

1) Relationship
John 3:27-28 27 John answered and said, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven. 28 You yourselves bear me witness that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent before Him.’

2) God’s Voice in the Church
Ephesians 4:11-12 11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,

3) Warnings from God
Matthew 3:1-2 in those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!”

4) Someone to stand for the people
Ezekiel 32:30   So I (GOD) sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one.

5) Intercessor
Genesis 20:7 7 now therefore, restore the man’s wife; for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you shall live. But if you do not restore her, know that you shall surely die you and all who are yours.”

Modern-day prophetic ministry involves turning the hearts of the fathers toward the sons and the hearts of the sons toward the fathers. Prophetic ministry, thus, turns the hearts of believers toward the matters of the Father's heart. Often, that means a cry for repentance as modern-day prophetic ministry works to separate the holy from the profane (Ezekiel 42:20).

What a Prophet Does!

1) Counsel1 Tim. 1:18
2) GuidanceActs 16-6
3) CorrectionHeb. 12:5-7
4) Motivation1 Peter 2:5
5) Imparting spiritual giftsRom. 1-11
6) Activating and anointing - 1 Tim. 5:22
7) Foundation - Eph. 2:20

If you are called as a prophet, you will feel moved to root out and to pull down and to destroy and to throw down and to build and to plant (Jeremiah 1:10). Intense spiritual warfare will be a frequent reality in your life. You will have a sense—a "knowing"—that you are being called to walk a narrower path than some around you. You will feel a sense of duty to honor God's will and be crushed with godly sorrow when you misstep.

Jeremiah 1:4-10 The Prophet Is Called
4 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying: 5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you;
Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”
6 Then said I: “Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a youth.”
7 But the LORD said to me: “Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’ For you shall go to all to whom I send you, And whatever I command you, you shall speak. 8 Do not be afraid of their faces, For I am with you to deliver you,” says the LORD. 9 Then the LORD put forth His hand and touched my mouth, and the LORD said to me:

“Behold, I have put My words in your mouth. 10 See, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms, To root out and to pull down, To destroy and to throw down, To build and to plant.”

There are at least 2 different kinds of prophetic words, understanding the difference and how to respond is the reason prophecy is shunned in many churches.

1) God says to you well done good and faithful servant and because of your progress “I God will do this for you”.

2) God says your moving in the right direction and if you continue in this right direction then this or this will surely occur.

The first is a reward from God the second you will need to pray in or continue in your Godly ways, in order to see this fruit. This is what can be not guaranteed.

Why do my gifts not seem to work right?

(These are some suggestions and places to start)

1) You used to believe you were called to prophetic ministry but now you are not so sure

2) You are wondering why your prophetic gift seems to be hidden and not recognized by other Christians or by leaders in the church

3) It is a long time since you stepped out, took a faith risk, and did something new in the use of your prophetic gift

4) You are drifting and have a lack of direction in your prophetic gift or ministry

5) You feel barren and are wondering where the fruitfulness is that you were promised or initially experienced when you started out

6) You recognize that difficulties in the use of your prophetic gift began with an event that occurred in your past

7) You are not sure what to do to get to the next level of growth in your gift of prophecy

8) You have been hurt or wounded in relation to your prophetic gift and haven’t gotten over it

9) You are not receiving opportunities to use and bless others through your gift that you would like to have

10) You are content with your current level of experience and do not have the motivation to press through for growth in your prophetic gift

11) You do have opportunities to use the gift of prophecy, but it is not flowing as smoothly or as accurately as you would like, or have known in the past.
