17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.
Many people think that since Jesus' death on the cross and the new covenant we received in Him means the Old Testament doesn’t count anymore. Here in this scripture Jesus makes it clear that the Old Covenant is not void but able to be completed. That is, through the work of Jesus Christ on the cross, we are able to fulfill the Old Testament requirements. Jesus has set us free from the law of sin and death.
Romans 8 (NKJV) Free from Indwelling Sin
8 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
This is why we are expected to make progress in our walk with Jesus and through the Holy Spirit, we are able to move past the sins of the past. Whatever you might be dealing with attack it through the Holy Spirit and you will see the victory. Do not be ashamed to discuss these things thoroughly with the Holy Spirit because He is our guide through these troubled waters.
Hebrews 8:7-12 A New Covenant
7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. 8 Because finding fault with them, He says: “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— 9 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord.
10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 11 None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”
Lord thank you for removing our hearts of stone and giving us new hearts of flesh. Hearts that forgive and hear your voice and love your word and follow it.
