Power To The People: Worship

November 25, 2018

I recall many times feeling like God was a million miles away and then, in an instant, I realized that He was there all around me.

The Bible says in Psalm 22:3 He actually lives and dwells in our praises. This is the mystery and the miracle of the breakthrough power and presence of God when we worship! When we worship, we affirm the truth of God’s Word, and it is being rooted deep in our hearts.

Psalm 22:3
But You are holy, Enthroned in the praises of Israel.

Definition of enthrone: transitive verb. 1a: to seat in a place associated with a position of authority or influence

When we worship, the invisible God is at work doing invisible and powerful things. We get realigned, refreshed and refueled; we find joy and peace. We discover the breakthrough strength of God, which enables us to walk in the truth, live in His presence and see Him fight our battles for us. It is how we can show the power of the Gospel for all to see. Receiving His many blessings and at the same time be a blessing to the world.

What is Worship?
The word that is frequently used in the Old Testament for worship is the Hebrew word “shachah” (Gen 22:5) which literally means “to bow down, to depress, to prostrate oneself” this is an open submission to God. We however don’t do it much because what would people think.  As for the New Testament, the Geek word “proskyneo” (Matt 2:11) is used and this means to “kiss the hand towards the one, in token of reverence”. So to worship God is to bow down to the ground (prostrate) and lay flat and to give a token of reverence (deep respect) for the glorious God.

What is Praise?
The word that is often used for the word praise is “yadah” (Gen 29:35) which is Hebrew for “to throw, shoot, cast, cast down” or “throw down” but sometimes the Hebrew “halal” (2 Chron. 7:6) is used which means “to shine, to flash forth light.” As for the New Testament usage of the word praise it is often “epainon” (Eph. 1:6) and means “commendation, approbation.” So to praise God is to throw down one self, to cast down, and to shine or flash forth light, or to cast or throw words of worthiness to God.

Praise and worship are a critical part of the Christian life not only for my relationship with God but those who live in my circle of relationships.

Ephesians 5
17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.

For most of us Worship and Praise does not come naturally; we have to work at it. However, there could not be a more worthwhile use of our time. Worship can open doors and heal wounds that nothing else can touch. It’s the presence of God in the Worship that brings the amazing reward it offers. Learning to be a Worshiper can usher you into the presence of God where you will not return the same and in the process things will happen that will shape you future and your destiny.

Psalm 150:1-6
“Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens! Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his excellent greatness! Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals!”

John 4:23
“But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeks such to worship him.”

Hebrews 13:15
“Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.”

Psalm 22:3
“Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.”

Colossians 3:16
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

Psalm 95:6
“Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!”
Praise and worship can be done in silence, in word, and in song and it is said that God inhabits the praises of His people.  That means that He is dwelling with or living in our praises and worshipping of Him.  A great way to rid yourself of depression, sadness, or when you’re going thru a great struggle is to start praising God and worshipping Him. It is hard to be sad or depressed when you are praising God and the sadness and depression are often broken by this approach.
